lonely loners

A great piece in the LA Review of Books on Louis CK’s TV show, his comedy style, and a few interesting comments on “the way we watch.” As I wrote to a friend earlier, I’d be suspicious of the claim that Louie’s success is a function primarily or exclusively on this “total creative control” he’s said to have (a claim I obviously doubt), because this seductive claim is supported by essentially no evidence. That is, there’s no global evidence that “final cut” or other kinds of creative control are correlated (independent of other attributes) with critical acclaim or popularity. But anyway: the show’s great, and the article’s interesting, and I’m curious to see what Eric Klinenberg has to say about the “alone/lone” argument.
