I really have some spectacular students this semester, one of whom sent along this video as a companion piece to my lectures on structural linguistics/semiotics. She thinks it illustrates well the discursive genres or codes that folks like Bakhtin/Voloshinov and Barthes address.

I think she’s brilliant for seeing the connection there, and I’m also intrigued at the possibility of using this at the start of my production of culture classes, to illustrate “artistic conventions” a la Becker.


And also “cough, cough”: Sly Stone appears to be living in a van by choice, although this assumes his massive addictions that make him too paranoid to enter his rental house are also choices, which I think it’s state of the art thinking.
