I know some of you have met Katherine–she’s a graduate student in our department and co-author with me of a paper on omnivorousness that we’ll present in August. She’s finally settled back in her apartment, and took the time to write a chronicle of her last weeks in the flood. Katherine’s one of the many folks in Nashville who were evacuated from the floodwaters and returned home to find they lost furniture, pictures and books, keepsakes, and a sense of security.
For those of you in Nashville who want to help, Hands on Nashville has an easy to use site where you can volunteer (and this is not just flood-related service, but tutoring, serving meals, etc.). You can also “Eat Out for Nashville” on Monday–participating restaurants will be donating half their proceeds to flood relief. Local artisans are in the mix–there’s a bevy of T-Shirt designs and posters being created to benefit flood victims and rebuilding efforts. There’s also a country show at the Ryman on Sunday benefiting the city; performers include Keith Urban, Martina McBride, Keb’ Mo’, Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum, Dierks Bentley, Kellie Pickler, Rodney Atkins, CeCe Winans, Jaci Velasquez, Randy Montana and Will Hoge.
Folks outside the city might consider giving to the Red Cross.
