If you’re in my generation (born between ’65 and ’75 or so) and you spent time in New York City, this video will bring back waves of nostalgia. The jokes about pickpocketers, the mention of Chinatown gang wars, the homeless car window washer with the showman’s touch, the sadness that Danceteria has been given over to the B&T crowd…all familiar. You can almost smell the urine, booze and crack smoke. Interesting for this sociologist to hear theories of history–the ebb and flow of nightlife trends, the lax supervision of some dangerous spaces (Chinatown) and not others (Eldridge Street drug supermarkets), etc. Newbies who never knew old New York but pontificate on the city should be sentenced to 24 hours of documentary film.
